He was the first person on-site with a working wire. He sent twelve messages before dawn. He counted the survivors. The number did not match the manifest.


Survivor Testimony — 1914

Account from the Tent Colony

She was inside a tent when the shooting started. She was inside the death pit when it ended. She survived. She was eleven years old.

Mine Record — 1879

Still Tapping

The rescue was called on October 17th. The tapping resumed at 9:41 that morning. The shaft was sealed on October 18th. When it was reopened in 1884, the fragments found with him indicated he had survived at least six days.
