In the winter of 1883, a curious phenomenon captured the attention of Fort Garland officer Captain Nathaniel Greene.

From the Obscura Oddities Desk

The history books are filled with stories of strange and unexplained phenomena that have occurred throughout time. One such occurrence happened in southern Colorado in the winter of 1883. At that time, Captain Nathaniel Greene, a military officer stationed at the Fort Garland military post, documented an unusual event - snow melting in a perfect circle without any signs of fire beneath it.

Captain Greene's observation was recorded in his personal diary, which has since been passed down through several hands and eventually found its way into the public domain. The circular patch of melted snow, approximately 15 feet in diameter, appeared as though it had been melted by an unseen heat source. However, upon thorough investigation, no evidence of fire or any other heat-generating activity could be found nearby.

This rare and intriguing event sparked much discussion among locals and military personnel alike. Various theories were proposed to explain the phenomenon. Some speculated that it might have been caused by a spontaneous combustion-like effect or even the Earth's magnetic field. Others suggested that perhaps a long-extinct volcano had mysteriously begun erupting again, albeit on a small scale.

Captain Greene himself remained somewhat skeptical of these conjectures but admitted that he could not offer a definitive explanation for the melted snow circle either. The records, if they survive, would show that this strange occurrence was well-documented at the time and remains an unsolved mystery to this day.

As with many historical enigmas, the truth may never be known. But the enduring intrigue surrounding Captain Greene's curious circle of melted snow serves as a reminder that history is full of unexplained wonders waiting for someone to unravel their secrets. It is said that if further records survive, they might reveal more information about this mysterious event and others like it that have been lost to time.
